(This) Pentecost Sunday and Summer Outreach

This Sunday we will celebrate God’s original gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church on Pentecost. We also will pray for that same Spirit to empower us in mission and ministry today. In particular, we will pray that the Spirit will carry us forward along the trajectory of intentional blessing and friendship-building we outlined during the Easter season. We will pray that He helps us make these into regular habits, and that over the summer, He will lead each of us toward a person or family we could invite to some opportunity to get to know one another better. Please keep those goals in front of you this summer, and keep praying!

To help us support each other in pursuing these goals, we also would encourage you to:

  1. Consider forming a “text group” with your In-N-Out small group, or another group of St. Peter friends, where you might briefly share stories when you connect with other people or otherwise “try it out.” This will keep outreach intentionally on our minds and will provide practical examples and encouragement to help us “see how it can be done.” Keep texts short and to the point, and leave others anonymous (general best policy). You might also be interested to know that your Elders, Mission Leadership Team, and Pastors have created one of these text groups together.
    • Example Text Story (from PC): “The other day, I noticed that the guy delivering my bulk mulch had a high school sports shirt on with a Greek motto on the back. So, flipping the script on our “biomen syndesmoi” shirts, I said: “hey, I see you have a Greek motto on your shirt. That’s unusual for a high school – why did they choose that?” He actually didn’t know, but we had a good chat about his former high school, the Northridge Raiders. It was a good connection, and I learned something about a community school I didn’t know much about.”

[That’s all you’d really need to say – and note that this is something anyone could have done. But I’ll also add, just for fun – and to sound a note of realistic expectations: since I happen to know Greek, I actually gave him the translation of the motto, hoping he’d go “how do you know Greek?,” which would lead to me saying I’m a pastor, which might then open another door. But he didn’t bite, and he had a schedule to keep that prevented another “swing.” Oh well, it was still a good connection!]

**Shout out to Pastor Borger for this text-group idea!
  2. Continue to make use of our last guide and submit even partial answers where you have an experience or question you want to get to PC, specifically.
  3. Click here for our Vimeo Outreach “Showcase” (their term) to hear any of the four Easter “intro” sermons you might have missed.

If you are new or new-ish to St. Peter, please arrange to meet with Renee after worship some Sunday to have a quick pic taken for the directory. If you/your family would like an updated picture, also get with Renee. She’s happy to send you these photos for your own personal use, as well!

There are other options as well, but those are our greatest needs. You can sign up here to volunteer or contact Melissa Luster-Bartz mlusterbartz@rlasouthbend.com

We are also COLLECTING PAPER TOWEL (or other similar/longer) tubes. You can bring your donations to the laundry basket in the Sunday School area.

There is an AMAZON WISH LIST with some items on it as well.  You can find that list here.

From WoSP: Update and Prayers for our Sponsored Seminarian and His Family

The Women of St. Peter are pleased to regularly offer financial assistance to a St. Louis seminary student. In recent years, several of us have been exchanging letters with our current seminarian, James VanOrman. He is entering his second year, and he is shown here with his wife Megan and their daughters Evangeline and Joy. The VanOrmans are from northern Michigan, and he will be a second-career pastor, having formerly been an instructor and lab coordinator in the biology department at Northern Michigan University. The Sem is constructing new housing for married students/families, so the VanOrmans have to move out this summer, live somewhere temporarily, then move into a new unit once the buildings are finished. Please keep James and his family in your prayers as they go through this time, and as he resumes studies this summer. He’s pleased to have “passed Hebrew” this spring. If you would like to be part of the letter-writing group, let Renee know. Thanks be to God for James and his family, and for their Yes to God’s call!
